One of Moonbury's two beat cops - and by far the more responsible of the pair - Derrek spends a surprising amount of the day not doing his job, considering his critiques of his brother. Though it's still easiest to find Derrek at the Police Department to the south of your home he also spends a lot of time either fishing, at the beach or Moonbury Park, or working out, outside his home or the park. Checking Derrek's home just north of Moonbury Town Square in the mornings is a safe way to track him down.
Once you've maxed out your friendship with Derrek - who doesn't seem all that interested in making your acquaintance - a notice will go up on Moonbury's Bulletin Boards. Xiao is the poster, and he wants volunteers to complete a few. He invites anyone who's interested to stop by Town Hall between 8:00 and 15:00, any day of the week.
Derrek will stroll up as you're perusing the Community Board, and he'll taunt you into accepting one of the more dangerous tasks: Defeating five Blackpaws. Blackpaws are the big, brown bears located beyond the landslide that blocks the outer sections of Meadow Range at the beginning of the game. There are three Blackpaws that you can defeat in a single trip to Meadow Range each day:
- One is located south of the exit to Glaze Iceberg, in the north of Meadow Range.
- Another is in a clearing to the south of where you can cut Feverfew, on the east side of Meadow Range.
- The third Blackpaw is located across a bridge to the west of the South of Meadow Range Fast Travel point, in the southwest of the forest.
You can't kill five in a single day, so this will need to be a two-day venture. Make sure to strip Meadow Range of resources in the process.
Head back to Town Hall between 8:00 and 15:00, any day that it's open, once you've defeated five Blackpaws. Derrek will be forced to swallow his pride - he appears to be a good sport, at least - and you'll improve your relationship with the surly cop to the second level. Max out this second level as you did the first and you'll unlock the next quest in his storyline, Excessive Exercise.
