A sleepy seaside town with an octopus obsession, Conning Creek doesn't seem all that important at a glance. At most it's a pleasant stop when traveling south through the Harborlands. This place is nevertheless crucial to the story of Osvald, whose life came to a jarring halt in Conning Creek, and he'll need to come back this way to begin his revenge. Ochette, too, has business in this town. You might as well look around if you need to keep coming back here.
Conning Creek is on the southeast coast of the western continent, though it does not serve as an anchorage. Although it is accessible by walking west through Hinoeuma, most routes will bring you to Conning Creek via the Canalbrine Bridge, to the north.
Services
Conning Creek offers the usual services of a town, complete with an Inn, a Tavern, and a General Store. There is no Armorer, and the few pieces of equipment on offer to travelers can be found at the General Store. Don't expect much.
In addition to its usual stores Conning Creek is also home to the Apothecaries Guild. It's based out of a nondescript house just south of the Inn. Speak to the Apothecaries Guild Master and he'll give you an Apothecary License, allowing characters besides Castti to become Apothecaries. You can obtain extra Licenses by gathering a few rae ingredients for the Guild Master.
Exits
- To the west of Conning Creek is the Western Conning Creek Coast, an area you'll need to explore to reach the town in the first place. It branches off north, deeper into the Harborlands, and west, into Hinoeuma.
- Once you've begun the second chapter of Ochette's story in Conning Creek you'll gain access to the Cavern of the Sea God, a small Danger Level 15 dungeon off the coast of the Harbor.
- The third chapter of Osvald's story will open up the Guard Outpost, a Danger Level 18 dungeon right in the middle of Conning Creek.
Treasures
- There are two buildings on either side of the stairs leading up to the Guard Post. The building on the right is someone's house, and inside you'll find a chest containing a Bottle of Befuddling Dust.
- Next to the General Store is a Guard. If you knock him out you can run behind the General Store and find a chest on a small ledge to your left. The chest contains a Blazon of Protection.
- Partway through the Outskirts, on the eastern edge of the town, you'll find a cemetery. On the right side of the cemetery is a chest containing an Inspiriting Plum (M).
- There's a chest behind Osvald's burnt-out home, on the east end of the Outskirts. The chest contains a Fire Soulstone (M).
- Head northwest along the beach that stretches along the northern edges of the Harbor. There's a chest here containing a Rainbow Glass Bottle. This is a quest item.
NPCs - Day (Conning Creek)
- Standing right by the entrance to the town is a Girl. She's carrying a Glass Marble, an Energizing Pomegranate, and an Empowering Lychee.
- Standing next to the path down to the Harbor is a Fisherman. He's carrying a Sailor's Vest and an Octopuff Pot. You should absolutely grab and equip the Pot, as it increases the chances of running into Octopuff Travelers as random enemies. The Fisherman knows of a hidden War Glaive, out front of the General Store.
- East of the save point is a Merchant with a stall. He's carrying a Healing Grape Bunch, an Inspiriting Plum Basket, and an Energizing Pomegranate (L). He knows of a hidden Olive of Life (M), sitting in a small garden out front of the Apothecaries Guild.
- Northeast of the save point are a Girl and her Townsperson mother, looking at a merchant's stall. They're collectively carrying Wheat Bread, an Olive of Life (L), an Herb of Light, an Herb of Healing, and an Inspiriting Plum Basket. The Townsperson knows of a Discount at the Inn.
- In the south of Conning Creek is the Apothecary Guild, and inside is an Elderly Woman. She's carrying an Olive of Life and a Fumbling Flower.
- Down the stairs from the Tavern is a Street Vendor. She's carrying a Fire Soulstone (M) and a Stimulating Bracelet.
- There are two customers inside the Tavern during the day. They're carrying a Critical Nut (L), an Octopath Bowl, two Antique Coins, and a Gold Ring.
- Inside the Inn is a... Partner. He's carrying a Healing Grape, an Inspiriting Plum, and an Energizing Pomegranate. He knows how to Provoke Like a Pro. (His personal story is a bit sad.)
- There are two men standing out front of the General Store. They're carrying a Healing Grape (M), a Dual Leaf, a Hairbrush, a Silver-Rimmed Monocle, and Dazzling Artwork. The Townsperson knows of a hidden Grape Leaf inside the Tavern, while the Merchant knows of a hidden Gold Pocket Watch outside the Tavern.
- There's a Guard on duty next to the General Store. He's carrying a Healing Grape, an Empowering Lychee, and a Light Coin Pouch. He knows of a hidden Inspiriting Plum (M) in the house to his right.
- The Guard inside the General Store is carrying a Long Sword, a Falcon Knife, and a Soldier's Bow. He will provide the General Store with More Plentiful Provisions if you ply him for info, which will greatly expand their stock of weapons and armor.
- On the road to the Outskirts you'll find a Guard. He's carrying a Steel Lance, a Guard's Armor, and a Guard's Shield. He knows of a hidden Critical Ring, sitting between some barrels by the Inn.
- Standing in the cemetery on the Outskirts is an Apathetic Girl with a Side Story. She's carrying an Empowering Lychee and Candy.
NPCs - Night (Conning Creek)
- There are two Guards standing by the town's entrance during the night. They're carrying a Slashing Glaive, an Inspiriting Plum (M), an Energizing Pomegranate, a Morning Star, a Bottle of Blinding Dust, and a Sticky Flower. The Guard on the left knows of a hidden Iron Shield a short walk to the south of the men, while the Guard on the right will teach you Masterful Mugging.
- There's a Townsperson standing by a stall to the east of the save point. She's carrying a Hairbrush and a Vivid Jewel. She knows the Level Sweep Skill, and is incredibly powerful.
- There are two new Apothecaries inside the Apothecary Guild at night. Between them they're holding two Herb Elixirs, a Diffusing Serum, a Darkdelion, an Herb-of-Grace Bud, and an Herb of Serenity.
- There are two newcomers in the Tavern at night, both sitting at the upper-left table. They're carrying a Champion's Garb, a Protective Bracelet, and a Light Coin Pouch. The Officer knows how to Guide with Ease.
- Inside the last house before you reach the Outskirts, next to the General Store, you'll find two people you met during the day and a Townsperson you did not. She's carrying a Healing Grape (M), an Inspiriting Plum (M), and a Round Shield. She knows of a hidden Thunder Soulstone, sitting on a small island to the west of the Cavern of the Sea God. You'll need access to a canoe to reach it.
NPCs - Day (Harbor)
- There's a Townsperson standing by a stall to the east of the stairs into the Harbor. She's carrying a Sharp Nut and a Light Nut. She knows of a hidden Tough Nut (M) on the path back to Conning Creek.
- There's a Townsperson standing by a run-down shack in the northwest. She's carrying an Energizing Pomegranate (M) and a Wind Soulstone (L).
Side Stories
- There's an Apathetic Girl standing amongst the gravestones out on the Outskirts of Conning Creek. She'll give you the A Young Girl's Wish Side Story.
- The Head Fisherman of the village hangs out on the beach of the Harbor during the day. He'll give you The Fish Filcher Side Story. (He also appears in the Tavern at night, though you can't get the Side Story from him then.)
