Dual Techs

Dual Techs require both characters to take their turn simultaneously, and to have sufficient MP to use the Dual Tech's component Single Tech. Characters must fight together at least once, with the required moves learned, to learn a Dual Tech. Note that Magus cannot learn any Dual Techs. (Though he can learn a few Triple Techs, listed at the bottom of this guide.)

The Ice Sword II Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Crono + Marle

Aura Whirl
  • Moves: Cyclone + Aura
  • MP Cost: 2 (Crono) / 1 (Marle)
  • Effect: Restores a small amount of HP to all allies
An early-game Dual Tech, and potentially the first you'll get. Great for 2300 AD, but loses steam pretty quickly.

Ice Sword
  • Moves: Cleave + Ice
  • MP Cost: 4 (Crono) / 2 (Marle)
  • Effect: Inflicts Water damage on a single enemy
A solid single-target Tech that's still decent later on if you must only hit one enemy at a time.

Ice Sword II
  • Moves: Frenzy + Ice II
  • MP Cost: 12 (Crono) / 8 (Marle)
  • Effect: Inflicts Water damage on enemies in a small radius
An upgraded, more-powerful version of Ice Sword. Good for battling bosses, but a bit expensive for Crono.

The Fire Sword II Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Crono + Lucca

Fire Whirl
  • Moves: Cyclone + Flamethrower
  • MP Cost: 2 (Crono) / 1 (Lucca)
  • Effect: Inflicts Fire damage on enemies in a small radius
An early-game Dual Tech that is quite useful for crowd control. Loses steam in 2300 AD.

Fire Sword
  • Moves: Cleave + Fire
  • MP Cost: 4 (Crono) / 2 (Lucca)
  • Effect: Inflicts Fire damage on a single enemy
A solid single-target Tech that's good against earlier bosses.

Fire Sword II
  • Moves: Frenzy + Fire II
  • MP Cost: 12 (Crono) / 8 (Lucca)
  • Effect: Inflicts Fire damage on enemies in a small radius
An upgraded, more-powerful version of Fire Sword. Good for bosses, but expensive.

The Sword Stream Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Crono + Frog

X-Strike
  • Moves: Cyclone + Slurp Slash
  • MP Cost: 2 (Crono) / 2 (Frog)
  • Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a single enemy
The first boss-centric Dual Tech that you'll get. A good budget move for most of the game, though outclassed by other Dual techs.

Sword Stream
  • Moves: Cleave + Water
  • MP Cost: 4 (Crono) / 2 (Frog)
  • Effect: Inflicts Water damage on a single enemy
A good single-target move against some bosses. Useful for the Magus battle in particular.

Lightning Rod
  • Moves: Lightning II + Aerial Strike
  • MP Cost: 8 (Crono) / 4 (Frog)
  • Effect: Inflicts Light damage on a single enemy
A powerful Light move against bosses. Recommended if you find Frog lagging in the damage department.

The Megavolt Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Crono + Robo

Supersonic Spin
  • Moves: Cyclone + Laser Spin
  • MP Cost: 2 (Crono) / 3 (Robo)
  • Effect: Inflicts Shadow damage on all enemies
The first Dual Tech you'll get that can damage every enemy on the screen, and a good source of Shadow damage if you want something stronger than Laser Spin. Outclassed later in the game.

Cyclone Sweep
  • Moves: Cleave + Laser Spin
  • MP Cost: 4 (Crono) / 3 (Robo)
  • Effect: Inflicts physical damage on enemies within Robo's range
A purely situational Dual Tech that only works well if Robo is surrounded by enemies. Not worth the MP in most cases.

Megavolt
  • Moves: Lightning II + Electrocute
  • MP Cost: 8 (Crono) / 17 (Robo)
  • Effect: Inflicts Light damage on all enemies
Relatively powerful, but you'll get similar results using Crono's Luminaire Tech. Save Robo's MP for something else, like Rapid-fire Fist.

The Falcon Strike Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Crono + Ayla

Drill Kick
  • Moves: Cyclone + Roundillo Kick
  • MP Cost: 2 (Crono) / 2 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a single enemy
A decent Dual Tech for bosses, but it gets overshadowed by Thunder Chomp in most situations.

Thunder Chomp
  • Moves: Lightning + Cat Attack
  • MP Cost: 2 (Crono) / 3 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts Light damage on a single enemy
A great Dual Tech for the time spent in 65,000,000 BC, and has occasional utility in the rest of the game as well, given its low MP cost and high damage.

Falcon Strike
  • Moves: Cleave + Boulder Toss
  • MP Cost: 4 (Crono) / 4 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a line of enemies
A somewhat situational Dual Tech, but comes in handy more often than not. Great choice for several bosses with multiple body parts or opponents (Giga Gaia, Archaeofangs, various Lavos phases).

The Antipode Bomb III Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Marle + Lucca

Antipode Bomb
  • Moves: Ice + Fire
  • MP Cost: 2 (Marle) / 2 (Lucca)
  • Effect: Inflicts Shadow damage on enemies in a small radius
A strong, early Dual Tech that allows you to target Shadow weaknesses. Good for earlier bosses, but falls off after a while.

Antipode Bomb II
  • Moves: Ice II + Fire II
  • MP Cost: 8 (Marle) / 8 (Lucca)
  • Effect: Inflicts Shadow damage on enemies in a small radius
An improved version of Antipode Bomb. Reasonably powerful, but does less damage on average than Marle and Lucca just using the individual Techs.

Antipode Bomb III
  • Moves: Ice II + Flare
  • MP Cost: 8 (Marle) / 20 (Lucca)
  • Effect: Inflicts Shadow damage on all enemies
An improved version of Antipode Bomb II. Deals plenty of damage, but Magus is more economical at targeting Shadow weaknesses.

The Glacial Freeze Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Marle + Frog

Ice Water
  • Moves: Ice + Water
  • MP Cost: 2 (Marle) / 2 (Frog)
  • Effect: Inflicts Water damage on all enemies
A surprisingly useful Dual Tech for obliterating enemies in the early- to mid-game dungeons, before your characters get their second-tier elemental spells.

Glacial Freeze
  • Moves: Ice II + Water II
  • MP Cost: 8 (Marle) / 8 (Frog)
  • Effect: Inflicts Water damage on a single enemy
A powerful, useful Tech to use against bosses.

Double Cure
  • Moves: Cure II + Cure II
  • MP Cost: 5 (Marle) / 5 (Frog)
  • Effect: Fully restore all allies' HP and status
A solid restorative Dual Tech to use in a pinch, though you may find items or Frog's Heal Tech to be more economical.

The Cure Wind Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Marle + Robo

Aura Beam
  • Moves: Aura + Cure Beam
  • MP Cost: 1 (Marle) / 2 (Robo)
  • Effect: Restores HP to all allies
A good emergency Tech early on, though if your party needs healing Robo's Heal Beam is usually good enough on its own.

Ice Tackle
  • Moves: Ice + Robo Tackle
  • MP Cost: 2 (Marle) / 4 (Robo)
  • Effect: Inflicts Water damage on a single enemy
A good, low-cost move to use against mid-game bosses with a vulnerability to Water.

Cure Wind
  • Moves: Cure II + Heal Beam
  • MP Cost: 5 (Marle) / 3 (Robo)
  • Effect: Restores HP to all allies
A stronger alternative to Robo's Heal Beam, but you usually won't need much more than Heal Beam itself.

The Twin Charm Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Marle + Ayla

Twin Charm
  • Moves: Allure + Charm
  • MP Cost: 1 (Marle) / 4 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Steal an item from an enemy
A stronger version of Ayla's Charm ability. A great choice if you can't seem to steal an item from an enemy with just Ayla, and Marle's turn happens to come up.

Ice Toss
  • Moves: Ice + Boulder Toss
  • MP Cost: 2 (Marle) / 4 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflict Water damage on enemies in a small radius
A good Water-powered form of crowd control, though Ice Toss is rendered largely obsolete by Iceberg Toss.

Iceberg Toss
  • Moves: Ice II + Boulder Toss
  • MP Cost: 8 (Marle) / 4 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflict Water damage on enemies in a small radius
An upgraded version of Ice Toss that works well against groups of enemies and bosses alike. A great choice if you find Marle's damage output to be underwhelming.

The Line Bomb Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Lucca + Frog

Red Needle
  • Moves: Fire + Aerial Strike
  • MP Cost: 2 (Lucca) / 4 (Frog)
  • Effect: Inflict Fire damage on a single enemy
A decent Fire attack against a single enemy, though Lucca will probably do more damage with Crono and Fire Sword.

Line Bomb
  • Moves: Megaton Bomb + Aerial Strike
  • MP Cost: 15 (Lucca) / 4 (Frog)
  • Effect: Inflict Fire damage on a line of enemies
A situational move that's a bit costly on Lucca's side. Good against bosses with multiple components that don't have a resistance to Fire.

Frog Flare
  • Moves: Flare + Frog Squash
  • MP Cost: 20 (Lucca) / 15 (Frog)
  • Effect: Inflicts Fire damage on all enemies
Potentially quite powerful, though as with Frog Squash Frog's HP needs to be low to pump up the Dual Tech's power. Not worth the MP in most cases, given the strength of Flare by itself.

The Double Bomb Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Lucca + Robo

Fire Punch
  • Moves: Fire + Rocket Punch
  • MP Cost: 2 (Lucca) / 1 (Robo)
  • Effect: Inflicts Fire damage on enemies within a small radius
A decent early-game Dual Tech that probably won't get a ton of use.

Fire Tackle
  • Moves: Fire II + Robo Tackle
  • MP Cost: 8 (Lucca) / 4 (Robo)
  • Effect: Inflicts Fire damage on a single enemy
Pretty decent Dual Tech, if a bit expensive for Lucca. Useful against certain bosses.

Double Bomb
  • Moves: Megaton Bomb + Proximity Bomb
  • MP Cost: 15 (Lucca) / 14 (Robo)
  • Effect: Inflicts Fire damage on enemies within Robo's range
Powerful, but restricted to Robo's range of influence. Not likely to get much use.

The Inferno Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Lucca + Ayla

Flame Kick
  • Moves: Fire + Roundillo Kick
  • MP Cost: 2 (Lucca) / 2 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts Fire damage on a single enemy
A strong, single-target target with decent longevity, at least until Blaze Kick comes along.

Inferno
  • Moves: Fire II + Tail Spin
  • MP Cost: 8 (Lucca) / 10 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts Fire damage on all enemies
A powerful crowd control Tech for random enemies, though Lucca's Fire II is usually strong enough on its own to wipe out groups.

Blaze Kick
  • Moves: Fire II + Triple Kick
  • MP Cost: 8 (Lucca) / 20 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts Fire damage on a single enemy
A very powerful Fire kick against a single target. Great against end-game bosses, but the high MP cost for Ayla may be too much for multiple uses.

The Frog Breath Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Frog + Robo

Frog Launcher
  • Moves: Slurp Slash + Laser Spin
  • MP Cost: 2 (Frog) / 2 (Robo)
  • Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a single enemy
A fairly basic attack move. Useful, but nothing special. You might as well just use Bubble Breath.

Bubble Breath
  • Moves: Water + Robo Tackle
  • MP Cost: 2 (Frog) / 4 (Robo)
  • Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a single enemy
A stronger single-target attack that hits reasonably hard. Better alternative to Frog Launcher.

Cure Wave
  • Moves: Cure II + Heal Beam
  • MP Cost: 5 (Frog) / 3 (Robo)
  • Effect: Restores HP to all allies
Good in a pinch, but since both Frog and Robo already have Single Techs that heal the whole party you don't really need to wait for both of their turns to line up.

The Slurp Kiss Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Frog + Ayla

Slurp Kiss
  • Moves: Slurp + Kiss
  • MP Cost: 1 (Frog) / 1 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Restores HP and status to all allies
A good alternative to a Panacea, but doesn't restore enough HP to be worth using otherwise.

Bubble Burst
  • Moves: Water + Roundillo Kick
  • MP Cost: 2 (Frog) / 2 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a single enemy
Hits relatively hard, but nothing special. Use against bosses if you can't target any weaknesses.

Dropdown
  • Moves: Aerial Strike + Triple Kick
  • MP Cost: 4 (Frog) / 20 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a single enemy
A powerful single-target move that's appropriate for bosses. The high MP cost for Ayla hurts its useability.

The Spin Kick Dual Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Robo + Ayla

Boogie
  • Moves: Robo Tackle + Charm
  • MP Cost: 4 (Robo) / 4 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts Stop status on all enemies
It's generally wiser to just try and defeat enemies in Chrono Trigger, so Boogie won't be all that useful.

Spin Kick
  • Moves: Robo Tackle + Roundillo Kick
  • MP Cost: 3 (Robo) / 2 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a single enemy
A good single-target move for boss battles.

Beast Toss
  • Moves: Rapid-fire Fist + Boulder Toss
  • MP Cost: 12 (Robo) / 4 (Ayla)
  • Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a single enemy
A powerful Dual Tech limited by its restrictions, as Beast Toss doesn't work against large / immobile enemies, such as most bosses. Probably won't get much use.

Triple Techs

Triple Techs require all three characters to use their turns at the same time. With the exception of three abilities, listed at the bottom of this guide, every Triple Tech in this list requires Crono to be a part of your party. The three Triple Techs that don't require Crono instead need one of your party members to equip a specific accessory.

The Delta Force Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Delta Force

Characters: Crono, Marle, Lucca
Moves: Lightning II + Ice II + Fire II
MP Cost: 8 (Crono) / 8 (Marle) / 8 (Lucca)
Effect: Inflicts Shadow damage on all enemies

A reasonably-powerful move, but Crono and Lucca can usually do more damage with their strongest Single Techs.

The Frost Arc Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Frost Arc

Characters: Crono, Marle, Frog
Moves: Cleave + Ice II + Aerial Strike
MP Cost: 4 (Crono) / 8 (Marle) / 4 Frog
Effect: Inflicts Water damage in a single enemy

A powerful, and surprisingly economical, Triple Tech. Having Marle and Frog together in your party isn't the best use of your character slots, but if that's your preference Frost Arc is a solid move.

The Lifeline Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Lifeline

Characters: Crono, Marle, Robo
Moves: Cyclone + Arise + Laser Spin
MP Cost: 15 (Crono) / 15 (Marle) / 3 (Robo)
Effect: Grants all allies a one-time auto-revive

A good backup move if you know you're getting into a difficult battle, though quite expensive for Crono and Marle. Still, you won't get a move like this elsewhere in the game.

The Final Kick Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Final Kick

Characters: Crono, Marle, Ayla
Moves: Lightning II + Ice II + Triple Kick
MP Cost: 8 (Crono) / 8 (Marle) / 20 (Ayla)
Effect: Inflicts Shadow damage on a single enemy

A powerful, but costly, single-target Triple Tech. Great against bosses with a vulnerability to Shadow attacks.

The Delta Storm Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Delta Storm

Characters: Crono, Lucca, Frog
Moves: Lightning II + Fire II + Water II
MP Cost: 8 (Crono) / 8 (Lucca) / 8 (Frog)
Effect: Inflicts Shadow damage on all enemies

A strong magical attack, but Crono and Lucca can do more damage using Luminaire and Flare.

The Ring of Fire Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.
Ring of Fire

Characters: Crono, Lucca, Robo
Moves: Cleave + Fire II + Laser Spin
MP Cost: 4 (Crono) / 8 (Lucca) / 4 (Robo)
Effect: Inflicts Fire damage to enemies within range of Robo

A powerful, inexpensive area move that's limited by Robo's placement on the battlefield. Entirely situational.

Gatling Kick, a Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Gatling Kick

Characters: Crono, Lucca, Ayla
Moves: Lightning II + Fire II + Triple Kick
MP Cost: 8 (Crono) / 8 (Lucca) / 20 (Ayla)
Effect: Inflicts Shadow damage on a single enemy

An expensive - but powerful - move. Hits hard, but you'll probably do more damage using individual moves.

The Triple Attack Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Triple Attack

Characters: Crono, Frog, Robo
Moves: Cyclone + Robo Tackle + Slurp Slash
MP Cost: 2 (Crono) / 4 (Robo) / 2 (Frog)
Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a single enemy

Likely to be the first Triple Tech you unlock in Chrono Trigger. A good choice for ripping up bosses in the Fiendlord's Keep, though Triple Attack falls behind other Triple Techs later on.

The 3-D Attack Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

3-D Attack

Characters: Crono, Frog, Ayla
Moves: Cyclone + Slurp Slash + Triple Kick
MP Cost: 2 (Crono) / 2 (Frog) / 20 (Ayla)
Effect: Inflicts physical damage on a single enemy

A strong, fairly economical move for taking on just about any boss, though Ayla loses MP quickly using this several times in succession.

The Twister Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Twister

Characters: Crono, Robo, Ayla
Moves: Cyclone + Laser Spin + Tail Spin
MP Cost: 2 (Crono) / 3 (Robo) / 10 (Ayla)
Effect: Inflicts Shadow damage on all enemies

Relatively inexpensive for a Triple Tech, and extremely powerful under the right circumstances. Good for crowd control.

The Master Mune Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Master Mune

Characters: Marle, Frog, Robo
Moves: Arise + Frog Squash + Heal Beam
MP Cost: 15 (Marle) / 15 (Frog) / 3 (Robo)
Effect: Inflicts damage on all enemies

A potentially powerful Triple Tech that requires Frog to have a low amount of HP to be effective. Combined with the fact that Frog must have the upgraded Masamune and the Gold Gemstone equipped, this isn't the best move in the world.

The Eternal Darkness Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Eternal Darkness

Characters: Marle, Lucca, Magus
Moves: Ice II + Fire II + Dark Matter
MP Cost: 8 (Marle) / 8 (Lucca) / 20 (Magus)
Effect: Inflicts Shadow Damage on all enemies

A powerful Triple Tech, one of only two that involves Magus, though generally inferior to Omega Flare thanks to its higher cost and slightly lower damage output.

The Omega Flare Triple Tech in Chrono Trigger.

Omega Flare

Characters: Lucca, Robo, Magus
Moves: Flare + Laser Spin + Dark Bomb
MP Cost: 20 (Lucca) / 3 (Robo) / 8 (Magus)
Effect: Inflicts Shadow Damage on all enemies

Generally considered one of the best Triple Techs in Chrono Trigger, thanks to its lower-on-average MP expense and high damage, though Lucca, Robo, and Magus can probably do more damage with Single Techs if given time.
