Edgar hangs out on the Blackjack in Final Fantasy VI.

Main Walkthrough

One of the best early-area abilities available in Final Fantasy VI, Edgar's Tools can help you dominate much of the first half of the game. Only Edgar (and, much later, Gogo) can use Tools, and they're great for a wide range of different situations. There aren't many battles where Edgar won't get at least some use out of his Tools.

This guide will help you find, and use, all of Edgar's Tools in Final Fantasy VI. There are three ways to get Tools:
  • Buy them from merchants, either in Figaro Castle or South Figaro
  • Steal them from enemies, or receive as drops
  • Find them in chests
Each Tool can be used unlimited times, so you only need to acquire them once. The earlier you get each Tool, the better they will be, since Tools drop off in usefulness when you reach the second half of Final Fantasy VI. We'll point you towards each Tool as early as possible to maximize Edgar's utility to your party.

Edgar uses the Auto Crossbow Tool in Final Fantasy VI.

Auto Crossbow

Ability: Inflicts physical damage on all opponents
Acquisition:
  • Default item for Edgar
  • Buy in Figaro Castle or South Figaro
  • Steal from Metal Hitman or Trapper
The first of Edgar's Tool, and the one you'll likely use the most. Auto Crossbow does a bit more damage than Edgar's standard attack for much of the game, and is excellent for crowd control. You probably won't stop using this Tool until you hit the World of Ruin.

Edgar uses the Noise Blaster Tool in Final Fantasy VI.

Noise Blaster

Ability: Inflicts Confusion on all enemies
Acquisition:
  • Buy in Figaro Castle or South Figaro
  • Steal from Junk or Left Crane
One of the first two Tools you can buy upon recruiting Edgar. The Noise Blaster is good for some early battles, but generally speaking you're better off just using the Auto Crossbow or the Bio Blaster to wipe out enemies.

Edgar uses the Bio Blaster Tool in Final Fantasy VI.

Bio Blaster

Ability: Inflicts Poison damage on all enemies
Acquisition:
  • Buy in Figaro Castle or South Figaro
  • Dropped by Proto Armor
  • Steal from Chaser or Tunnel Armor
The other of the first two Tools you can buy upon recruiting Edgar. The Bio Blaster performs a little worse than the Auto Crossbow against most enemies, except for humans. Use it on human enemies for great results. The combination of the two weapons makes Edgar quite the powerhouse early on.

Edgar uses the Flash Tool in Final Fantasy VI.

Flash

Ability: Inflicts neutral damage on all enemies, may inflict Darkness
Acquisition:
  • Buy in Figaro Castle (after Battle of Narshe)
  • Steal from Death Machine
Another group attack that serves as a good replacement for the Auto Crossbow, after the Battle of Narshe. The fact that it inflicts Blindness isn't likely to be all that useful, but, who cares.

Edgar uses the Drill Tool in Final Fantasy VI.

Drill

Ability: Inflicts physical damage on a single target, ignoring defense
Acquisition:
  • Buy in Figaro Castle (after Battle of Narshe)
  • Steal from Fortis
An excellent Tool for battling bosses, and a great way to get around enemies that take minimal damage from most attacks. The Drill isn't quite as powerful as the Chainsaw, but the fact that it never defaults to Instant Death makes it the better choice for most situations.

Edgar uses the Chainsaw Tool in Final Fantasy VI.

Chainsaw

Ability: Inflicts physical damage on a single target, ignoring defense, may inflict Instant Death (25% chance)
Acquisition:
  • Solve the clock puzzle inside Zozo's inn (check the clock and enter 6:10:50)
  • Steal from Duel Armor
The most damaging Tool Edgar gets. Chainsaw can inflict ridiculous amounts of damage in the World of Balance, making a joke of bosses - unless Edgar throws on a hockey mask and goes for an Instant Death attack, which may not do anything. If you're in a dire situation and don't want to risk hitting that 25% sour spot of Instant Death, stick with the Drill.

Debilitator

Ability:  Assigns a random elemental weakness to a single target
Acquisition:
  • Buy in Figaro Castle (World of Ruin)
  • Steal from Armored Weapon, Missile Bay (Air Force), Right Crane
A situational Tool with some usefulness against enemies with lots of elemental immunities (Intangir in the World of Balance, for example). Not that amazing.

Air Anchor

Ability: Inflicts Heat on an opponent, killing them the next time they try to attack
Acquisition:
  • Found in Cultists' Tower
  • Steal from Gamma
The last Tool you're likely to get, and quite situational. If an enemy is vulnerable to Death attacks then the Air Anchor wipes them out in two turns; if they aren't, it's useless. Most bosses aren't vulnerable to Death attacks, so you'll have to find novel uses against normal enemies.
