Owner and captain of Final Fantasy VI's two airships, Setzer plays another role besides head of transportation for the party: He's also a party member. Like every permanent party member Setzer has his own, unique special ability, in this case known as Slots. Befitting Setzer's love of gambling, Slots is almost entirely luck-based.
Slots uses a series of slot machine reels to determine the nature of Setzer's attack. Whenever you choose the Slots command you'll need to manually stop the reels, one-at-a-time, and the combination displayed dictates what happens next. Most of Setzer's Slots abilities inflict magic damage, making it useful to raise Setzer's Magic stat if you want to maximize the potential of Slots.
It is possible to manipulate the Slots command to give you the results you want. This requires pause buffering, as well as strategic use of items / magic. (For the most part you'll be using Echo Herbs.) This guide can help you get started on manipulating Setzer's Slots command to your advantage. This video is also quite helpful for getting the timing.
In the Pixel Remaster version of Final Fantasy VI you need to trigger all of Setzer's Slots to get the Master Gambler Achievement. The best way to do this is to just set your game to autobattle and let it run until it hits all of the combinations. This can take a while on three 7s, but the alternative - doing it manually - can take forever.
Mysidian Rabbit (Lagomorph)
Combination: Any random combination of results
Rarity: Very common
Restores a small amount of HP to all characters, and heals Poison, Darkness, and Sleep status. Mysidian Rabbit is considered the 'losing' Slots command, though it can come in handy if your party is burdened with status ailments.
Chocobo Stampede (Chocobop)
Combination: Three chocobos
Rarity: Common
Inflicts non-elemental magic damage to all enemies, ignoring defense. The weakest of Setzer's successful Slots results. The chocobos don't do that much damage, and the attack doesn't work on flying enemies. Still, it's better than Mysidian Rabbit.
Prismatic Flash (7-Flush)
Combination: Three diamonds
Rarity: Common
Inflicts non-elemental magic damage to all enemies. Arguably the most common Slots results that you'll get outside of Mysidian Rabbit. The damage is decent, if not outstanding, and good against groups of random enemies. (Though the more enemies there are, the less damage this attack does to each.)
Dive Bomb (H-Bomb)
Combination: Three airships
Rarity: Uncommon
Inflicts non-elemental magic damage to all enemies. A fair step up from Prismatic Flash in terms of damage, though Setzer can still do better.
Mega Flare (Sun Flare)
Combination: Three grey birds / dragons
Rarity: Rare
Inflicts non-elemental magic damage to all enemies. This is essentially the Bahamut summon, just minus an MP cost. Mega Flare is weaker than Dive Bomb to individual enemies but will likely do more damage to groups, as it doesn't split damage between individuals. You won't see this one too often.
Summon
Combination: Three 'Bar' signs
Rarity: Rare
Summons a random Esper to the field. Ths effects vary from Esper to Esper, so this may or may not prove useful - though it can be interesting to see Espers whom you haven't collected. This command will not summon Odin, Raiden, or any of the version-exclusive Espers.
Joker's Death (Joker Doom)
Combination: Two 7s and a 'Bar' sign
Rarity: Very rare
Immediately KOs the entire party, ignoring Instant Death immunity. Easily the worst result you can get from the Slots command - though Joker's Death is also quite rare, so you don't need to worry about it too much.
Joker's Death (Joker Doom)
Combination: Three 7s
Rarity: Extremely rare
Immediately KOs all enemies on the field, ignoring Instant Death immunity. Easily the best result you can get from the Slots command, as it ends the battle in your favor. There are some specific battles where you simply can't get this outcome, and all of them are bosses. Here are the ones where Setzer may be present:
- Guardian (Vector, unwinnable battle)
- Ultros / Typhon (airship)
- Dullahan (Darill's Tomb)
- Humbaba (Mobliz, except for the final battle)
- Behemoth King (Cave on the Veldt, first phase only)
- Chadarnook (Owzer's Mansion)
- Wrexsoul / Soul Saver (Cyan's Dream)
- Kefka, first three phases (Kefka's Tower - still works on the final boss battle)
